Hon. Richard Yates
Dear Friend
I hope you will not pay any attention to the views of the Tribune, they do not reflect the views of Republicans hear atal. Just as soon as the old Democratic leaders can find an opportunity they will make an issue again with us, and we may expect it very soon. The indications are that Crittenden will be elected to Congress, Then Kentucky will come forward with some confounded compromise and we shall be sold out by any democrat that can be appointed. Why would it not be well to appoint some aspirant for the Governorship and then we can make him
Governor at the end of four years and releave the thing of any embarrassment, but for God sake appoint a tried and true Republican. Browning is here most favourable spoken of, his appointment would be hailed with pleasure and he is such a good friend of yours, as that there could of course no conflict come between yourself and him.
I hear it rumered that you have been inclined to appoint Scammon, now above all things that you could do, this would afflict the party here most.
Do not consider me medling with what does not concern me. I know that as a general thing you have elected to counsel, not with your true friends here in matters concerning us here, but excuse this.
Very Truely your friend
as ever
