Gov Yates

As a member of the Republican party I take this opportunity of expressing my regret at your appointing a man to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Senator Douglas. Whose principles were directly opposite those of his when he was elected to that honorable position.

Douglas was elected to carry out the principles of "non Intervention by congress" for a certain time which has not expired and should be filled by a man who holds that principle until the time does expire. Not only the Democrats of Indiana [murmer?] at this unprincipled act but the Republicans denounce you as unworthy of the position you hold. In this state all party lines are obliterated. And the people here thinking the Hon Gentleman you have appointed too Honorable to except. We hope that you will show your love for your state and respect for Douglas by appointing Hon Jas Allen to fill the vacancy. By so doing you will show your patriotism and gain the

the esteem of the American people
