Oct. 13th [186]4.
Hon. Wm. Dennison
Post Master General
Washington D.C.
Dear Sir,
Our brief, but to me most agreeable acquaintance, causes me to write you in behalf of a most noble man of Philadelphia, Mr W M Godwin, and to request that he be promoted to Chief Clerkship, or retained with an increase of salary. Mr. Godwin is one of the most faithful of men – a man of education, and high standing (over)
with a large and most respectable family for whose support his present salary is inadequate.
If you can grant this request, I will consider it a personal favor, to be reciprocated if ever in my power.
I have known the family long and well, and can say of Mr G. that he is a most capable and efficient officer.
Very Respectfully.
Your Obedient Sert
Richd Yates
Governor of Ills.
