Col: In the absence of Governor Yates I have the honor to inform you in reply to your communication of the 10th instant that it will be impossible for him to comply with your request to be present at your Union meeting on the 5th of November next as he has an engagement previously announced covering that time.

The Governors engagements previously made, and the duties of his office are so arduous that he cannot possibly make as

many speeches as he would wish to.

I will refer your letter to him as soon as he returns, and notify you in time if his engagements and time will allow it.
