Springfield Ills.
June 21st 1861
His Excellency
Gov Yates
Sir
You will pardon the liberty I take in thus addressing you. By the stringency of the times & by misfortunes that could not be foreseen - I am thrown upon the world with nought, but my character and capacity whatever they are - and at an age, in which the "footprints of time" are quite legible.
Under these circumstances I am reluctantly constrained to bring myself before you and respectfully ask for some situation (if there be such at your disposal) by which I can obtain a livelihood for myself & family. I ask no sinecure - shall expect none. Employment here would be desirable, but that will not be made a condition
Many of the duties in Quartermaster's or Commissaries Department I trust I could perform with acceptance
For further information concerning my character or capacity I would refer you to James Campbell Esq. and Rev Albert Hale both of this city
Very Respectfully Yours
