His Excellency Gov. Yates
Springfield Ills.
Respected sir,
In reply to your kind favor of the 17th Jan I will say this that I hardly expected your Excellency to give me an appointment for the reasons you have already given for it would hardly be right to do so. I avail myself of your truly kind offer of a letter to the President and ask your Excellency to so oblige me I should have raised a Company in the beginning of the war but there were too many difficulties in my way. I should very much like to get a position in the Brigade of Cassius M. Clay who I am told will be appointed a Brigadier General on his return home.
Accept Your Excellency
the best Regards of
Your Obt Servt
