Dear Governor

Major Hugo Hollan of quincy was the first man there to enlist. He has been in the Austrian and Hungarian service for fifteen years in the Cavalry. I have carefully examined his papers, and he has excellent testimonials from Gen. Guyon, Bern & Kossuth. A first Lieutenant in the Austrian Hussar he rose to the rank of major in the Hungarian Hussars (the first cavalry in the world) He ought to have a captaincy at least in a cavalry regiment. Gen. Prentiss knows him well and speaks highly of him. He refers also to Gov. Wood, Browning & Gen Singleton. The cavalry drill is a severe one, and but very few in the State could instruct in it.

Major Hollan is corporal in the quincy company, but detailed as an old soldier to the artillery now here. Let me recommend him earnestly to your favorable consideration.

Yours truly

G Koerner
