Dear Sir: I would respectfully recommend and urge the promotion of Col. P Sidney Post, 59th Illinois Volenteers to the position of Brig. General. Col Post is the senior Colonel in the 4th Army Cops. and has as I am informed been highly recommended for promotion by Generals Sherman, Thomas, Stanley, [Rosecrans?], Wood, Davis and others. His long and faithful

services, his ability and patriotism, his severe and honorable wound, the heroic gallantry of his regemint and the important services it has rendered under him make such a mark of favor both appropriate and deserved. As commander of a Brigade he has shown himself capable and efficient and has the name of an energetic and vigerous officer who is wholly devoted to the cause. His promotion will be a just tribute to Western valor, and a further recognition of the fact that the sons of Illinois have nobly sustained the government in the days of its peril and will be gratefully remembered by -
