Dr Sir
Permit me to introduce to you the bearer of this Mr E. A. Kirk who goes to Springfield for the purpose of having a regiment of soldiers now being organized in the Counties of Whiteside Lee Ogle & Carroll accepted by the state & mustered into actual service The regiment so far as organized is composed of some of the best men in said Counties and will make in my opinion a "Crack" regiment. There is great [interest?] felt in its organization by all the Counties mentioned Mr Kirk who has been chosen "Col" is a gentleman of high standing & character in this section -; is a member of the bar of this Court and a personal friend of mine -
We here feel a deep interest in the organization of the regiment represented by Mr Kirk - & its acceptance will confer a great favor upon those interested & Especially upon myself - any assistance rendered to Mr Kirk will be fully appreciated by -
