Gov Yates
Honored Sir
Will you be so kind as to hear a few words from me an entire stranger to you. I am very anxious in some way to serve my country but every thing I try I am shure to meet with some disapointment however I am not going to give up. Hearing of your kindness and sympathy for our country's sick and wounded I apply to you to help me in obtaining a situation in some hospital where I can do some good. I am rather young but steady haveing seen a great deal of trouble loosing my parents quite young and dependant
upon my own resources for a living. I have concluded to serve my country in some way if not in a hospital upon the tented field it is not the wages I am after for my heart tells me I should do something for my loved country which is now in so great trouble. If you think this worth a hearing pleas answer as soon as possible if I can't help in a hospital I can carry a musket.
Yours with respect
E. S. W.
Enclosed you will find an envelope with my address.
