Gov Yates
Dear Sir: Having been informed that by applying to you for aid could obtain it under circumstances in which I am now placed.
My husband has been in the army for over two year now and am left alone with four small children to support. At the time my husband left we were getting along very well with his aid, and after he went away for a year when he got paid for his services we managed to get along without assistance from any other quarter but for the last year for some reason or other he has not received any pay. So that now I am entirely destitute of means to go on. if it is in your power to help me any I should be very thankful. If I don't get help I don't know what will become of my little children.
Hoping to recieve something I close
Respectfully yours, Mrs. Jane Porterfield
