Woodville, June 6/64
Gov. Yates
Sir
Presuming much upon your kindness to the soldier, I have ventured to address you upon a subject which I consider but Justice.
My husband enlisted in the service of the United States, in Illinois Winnebago Co two years ago this coming August. By enlisting he lost nearly three hundred dollars by being obliged to sell stock &c at reduced prices, which also reduced my means of support to a very limited allowance. but he my husband was faithfully promised that his family should be cared for by those in authority. I wished to come to Ohio to live among my friends during my husband's absence and was told that would not make the least difference. Well to cut the matter short I have never received one cent. I made
application but it did no good my husband has no been in hard service ever since he entered but the Army and is now wounded lying in the hospital at New Albany Ind where I would go to him if I had the means but I am in hopes he will be furloughed I pray God he may.
Now my dear sir I would never have written this to you if I were a healthy woman and able to support myself and family I have to children now. I lost a little boy about a month ago. I am sick a great deal tis true I get my husband's wages but I ask you if you could support a family of 4 on thirteen dollars a month. I could get along well enough were it not for sickness. I have not meant to tell you a pitiful tale to excite your pity but I have merely stated the plain truth and ask you that justice may be done me.
I have five brothers in the army beside
numberless other relatives and no one of us have ever made application for relief but me and I have never received any I do not think I shall starve if I do not get anything for I have planted a patch of potatoes and sugar cane and if I am able to take care of them I shall have that much at any rate and I am also reviewing my studies intending to teach again if my health will allow me.
Hoping to hear from you soon.
I remain your Obt Serv't
