Attornies at Law, and Claim, Pension and Real Estate Agents
Cairo, Ill., June 25th 1864
Governor Yates When in Springfield I had intended seeing you relative to a friend of mine Dr H H Davis formerly Surgeon of 18h Ill Vol & lately mustered out= term having expired. I understand the Dr has received the appointment of Asst Surgeon in the Regular army and he desires to be placed in Some easy place where he will have less work to do than has been his fortune for the last 3 years. Now in his behalf let me say that I know him, I knew him when he was a private in 8” Ills vols (I think it was) helped him get his comsn as Surgeon. Was with him through [6?] battles & 18” months hard service. He has been always a hard working man. Always in the field. And always at his post of duty. If any man deserves an easy place he does, & if such a place at a post in Hospital
Some where in Illinois can be given him I am sure it will be a well merited act for an efficient & laborious surgeon. Besides if he is compelled now to go into the field as asst surgeon, many men of less ability & of less Services & experience will take rank over him who heretofore were under him, you know how this makes a man of his sensibilities feel.
I am very truly Yours &c I N Haynie
Gov Yates
