Albion, Edwards Co. Ill. Aug. 2nd 1861.
Hon R. Yates, Gov. Illinois,
Dear Sir
When I left home (Richview) on Tues. last, much fears was entertained by the Union men, that the secessionists of Washington County was on the eve of an outbrake, on the Unionists. Many threats have been belched out, & secret organizations have been formed, & secret meetings are weekly being held by them, which we learn is the case in most of the Counties South of us.] All of this means something & I would suggest, that a sufficiency of the Soldiers be left in these Southern Counties for the protection of the women & children, & the aged & infirm.
It is thought by many, that just as soon as the Secessionists thinks the Soldiers are out of the way, that they will be ready for a demonstration.
Of late, these Secessionists have been very bold in Nashville, & have either halled
down the Union Flag, or made such threats, that it was took down for the preservation of the peace.
So, we trust, that we shall not be overlooked, in time of need.
In haste, yours for Christ, Liberty, & the Union.
