To his Ex Richard Yates,
Dear Governor,
Enclosed you will find a letter of recommendation in behalf of my young friend whom I introduced to you the other Day James M. Blake he is an orphan boy and a most excellent patriotic young man, please recomend him to Ad. Gl. Thomas for a Leutenancy in one of the Negro Regts in the Department of Tennessee said James M. Blake intends going down there next week in company of Capt: Thomas Curtis 3d. U. S. C. I. said Capt. Curtis takes a Deep interest in said Blake, please forward a recomendation to me here at Alton as soon as possible.
We have finally got to Doing Duty and have releived 8 Companies of the Cav Regt: here which have been sent south, we are Doing well, but would like to have a better organization.
