Chicago July 8th 1864.
Gov. Yates,
Dear Sir,
My son, Holmes Hoge, has been in the Quartermaster’s Depart. U.S. Army 15 months, promoted from Mercantile Battery, in which he enlisted the year previous. His rank is Capt. He was with Capt. Potter, the first few months. Unexpectedly to Capt. P., who gives him the highest testimonials he was ordered to N.O. where he has been, since, in Banks' Depart.
He filled the position of Div. Q.M. of the Cavalry Div. & gave much satisfaction, was on Gen. Lee's Staff, till Gen L. was relieved. He is now Post Q. M. at Port Hudson La. I feel extremely anxious to have him brought north, as he has spent both summers in the South. Capt. Potter says, has he a vacancy, he would ask at once for his services. He suggested to me, this morning, that I should write you at once, & say that he thinks an Asst. Q.M. is needed at Springfield. Should you have the goodness to

see Capt. Campbell, Q.M. at Springfield, and make the suggestion to him, & then write to the Sec. Of War, asking that my son should have the position, the matter would be at once consummated. Had I not had frequent experience of your personal kindness, I should hesitate to ask this favor. But I do not from you, who have always been my friend; specially, as I can endorse my son in every particular, for uprightness, strict morality & good business ability.
Capt. Potter says I can do this safely. As we are fast on toward the middle of July, I shall await your action & answer with great interest.
Most respectfully, your friend, Mrs. A.H. Hoge
