His Excellency,

Gov. Yates,

Springfield, Ill.

My dear Governor:

I arrived here on Saturday from Washington, and am now settling up some business affairs, preparatory to the "Fall Campaign" in this State. I am anxious to close these matters up as soon as possible, as I am not (while here) earning any thing.

You remember, while at Washington, that you said you would pay me that amount due me on an "old trade" of ours. I would like it now if possible, and

would consider $300 ample. There is also a bill of mine against the note for $260, which John Snyder has. If you could not pay both just now, I would even be glad to have one of them [now?], although I am badly in need of all I can get just now; I did not earn any thing in Washington, as my expenses were very great, and the cost of living of my family at home has been very great, also.

I hope you will pardon me for pressing these matters just now. Believe me I would not do so, but that I greatly need the funds.

Please write me as soon as possible, as every

day I remain idle here is a great expense to me

I have met several of your friends since I arrived here, all of whom are as enthusiastic as ever. I noticed some of them were very anxious to find out whether I [illegible] not been "weaned off" of my "first love" while at Washington. I [illegible] them.

The whisky men are going to spread money to beat Washburne in his district. They will also work as hard against Arnold here. Ward's tick is [down?]. Ira Y. [illegible] of Board of Trade is spoken of. The anit-Arnold men say Long John works for A. he [illegible] he is the weakest man, and will then "run stump" on Fremont ticket (tho Democrats making no [illegible] motion) against him.

Please let me hear from you right away, as the [sooner?] I do, the sooner I will be able to commence work at Springfield.

Every, your's truly,

Jos. K. C. Forrest.

Forrest Joe. K. C

Wants either the $300 which he spoke to Gov about in Washington or $200 which the State owes him. Is in great need of it.
