His Ex. Richard Yates, Governor,
Dear Sir;
Your very kind letter of the 2nd inst, addressed to Rev. Dr. Dempter and myself, was received very unexpectedly this morning, and perused with much pleasure. Accept my hearty thanks for your appreciation of our simple endeavor to serve our Country in a Christian way, and for the photograph likeness and autograph. My esteemed colleague on that [mission?] the Rev. Dr. Dempter (who was the Professor of Theology in the Methodist Episcopal Biblical Institute at Evanston, near this city) departed this life about six months since; but I have sent a copy of your letter and one of the cartes de Visite to his widow, who will estimate the tokens highly. May God send us deliverance from our National troubles in such a time and way as to ensure our future prosperity by basing it on impartial justice to all men.
Respectfully Yours
