Head-Quarters First Division, Seventh Army Corps,
Little Rock, Ark., July 20th 1864.
To His Excellency
Richard Yates
Governor of the State of Illinois
Governor:
The veteran portion of the 43d Illinois Vol. Infantry is under orders to proceed to Illinois to recruit and re-organize.
This Regiment has served in my Division since about the middle of March last under command of Lieutenant Colonel Dengler, and has deservedly won high praise for its gallantry in action and general soldierly appearance.
The Colonel of the Regiment commands one of my Brigades, and I consider it very essential that the Regiment should have annother field officer. I therefore respectfully recommend to you Excellency's favorable consideration,
basing my judgement upon personal knowledge, to be promoted to be Major in the Regiment, Captain Samuel Schimminger, an officer in every way qualified for the position and one who by close attention to his duties as Captain, both in Camp and in the field, has fully earned the promotion recommended.
I am, Governor
Very Respectfully
Your Obedt Servant
F Salomon.
Brig. Genl. U.S. Vols.
43rd Regt
