October 7th [186]3.
Dr. J. S. Newberry.
Secretary U S Sanitary Commission
Louisville
Ky.
Dear Sir:
I desire to introduce my friend Mrs. C H. Morton, of Quincy Ills. wife of Lieut Col. Charles H. Morton of the 84th Regt. Ills. Vols. who was, it is reported, wounded at the battle or Chickamauga, and we have painful rumors as to his safety.
Thinking you can furnish facilities more promptly for communicating personally with the Army of the Cumberland, than could be procured thorough the Military authorities at Louisville I commend her to your kind notice, earnestly requesting that you will secure safe passage for herself and
attendant to Chattanooga or such port within the lines of the army of the Cumberland as she may desire to visit, for the purpose of looking after her husband an officer of whom, Illinois has had reason to be proud on several hard fought fields.
Mrs M. is a lady of great personal worth, and has devoted the largest share of her time since the war began in collecting and forwarding supplies amounting to thousands of dollars, for our sick and wounded soldiers. The “Quincy Needle Pickets” an organization known and esteemed in every Illinois camp & Government Hospital in the Valley of the Mississippi was organized, and has been maintained principally through her influence. I will esteem courtesies to her as a great kindness to myself.
Very respectfully & Truly
Richd Yates
Governor
