With J.N. Buck letter 8/5/61
Joliet Aug 4th 1861
Gov Yates
Dear Sir I learn that you may find some dificulty in getting the seventeen Regiments. Doct M.N. Taylor of our place who wished me to tender a Reg for him is willing to take Lieut Coly in the Regiment if you put a good capable man for Col and will get up the Regiment from the Counties of Knox, Henry, Mercer, & Warren, perhaps one Comp from Fulton. He Taylor is willing to be thoroughly examined in Military skill & tactics, if not able to pass will stand back for others to take the Regiment.
The Volunteers will not leave their
without knowing they are to be accepted. If you can still find a place for them please Telegraph me here. & enclose to M.K. Taylor Galesburg a Coly Commission, conditioned that he passes examination, I trust you will see the importance of giving those Counties a fair Representation in this way. Taylor is a man of good moral character, does not drink or swear, & is a good disciplinarian. It may they are making arangements to have Fremont get them into the Missouri State Army, do not know.
I understand the Adjutant has kept a list of the surplus Companys offered last Spring which he hands over to you now. Not one of those tendered from our County then are
now in existence. 2 of them enlisted in St Louis, 1 was acepted & the best of all the Scandinavian Boys, disbanded. I have gone some to Virginia some to Caro & some to Mo.
Yours Truly Geo W Bergen
