Carlinville Aug 10th 1861
Gov Yates
I received your letter of the 8th yesterday in which you kindly offer to give me a letter of recommendation if I wish wish to go to Washington and take the chance of getting an appointment for which I am much obliged. I have already troubled you much more with this matter than I intended as I know your time is all occupied with important public duties. I presume the pressure for places at Washington is very great and can only be obtained by an earnest and persevering
effort of the applicant and also influential friends. Never having asked for any thing before I find myself absolutely unable to mak that persistant effort necessary to success. I am unwilling to trouble you further with any application. I appreciate your efforts in my behalf as cordially as if they had resulted differently
