ASSESSOR'S OFFICE United States Internal Revenue ELEVENTH DISTRICT, ILLINOIS Summer, Lawrence Co. August 2nd 1864
Hon R. Yates Springfield Ill
Dear Sir;
Permit me respectfully to suggest for your favorable Consideration the Claims of H.H. Baker private of Capt W Hights Co. in the 61st Regiments Ill V.I. to promotion, for the following reasons;
1st He was among the first in '61 to volunteer in the three months. After the expiration of his term he returned with impaired health.
2nd He was, after recruiting his health, engaged in recruiting for the three year's service for various Companies during some 8 months
3rd As a consideration for the time and money then spent in this Service he was led to expect he would receive some position of honor or profit
4th He volunteered in the three years Service as soon as health would permit and not withstanding his expectations, has continued without a murmur, in the Service as a private during the last 18 months.
5th He has performed all the duties required
of him by his officers with promptness and fidelity and would be cordially recommended by his officers
6th His father Col S.F. Baker who is a devoted patriot & has cheerfully sent three sons into the three years service, together with numerous friends, would earnestly recommend this young soldier as worthy of promotion.
Your compliance with this request will confer a great favor on a worthy young soldier, much oblige his numerous friends and especially his patriotic father & your
Humble Servant
