Chicago Aug. 11, 1864 Gov. Yates Dear Sir, Our Methodist friends were a little exercised the other day when the appointment of the committee on the land grant by the General Government for Agriculture & Mechanical College purposes. The occasion was this, that, out of a committee of seven, you had placed upon the committee very prominant Gentlemen from almost every other denomination of Christiasn except - the Methodist Church, which is the most numerous, and influential
of any other in the state, and too, the church that has done more for education in the state than any other.
You know that there are always efforts made by these church men to draw these institutions under their patronage. In this instance it should not be done, and as our friends say they only want to watch to see that this is not done.
I am requested to say to you, that if it is consistent with your views of propriety, that you add two members to the committee and make it Nine instead of seven.
The names of Revd. Robert Allyn D.D. of Lebanon, the President of McKindry College
and Revd Thomas M. Eddy D.D. of Chicago. To these gentlemen you can send certificates of their appointment and it will all appear as original
With many good wishes for your self and family. I remain as ever Your friend J.W. Waughop
