Governor Yates,
I have been thinking for some time of writing to you, requesting your Photograph, and Autograph. I do not know whether you have time to bestow one moment or two one one but hope you have. The affairs of the state must demand the most of your time.
I remember the reception of Gen. Sheridan at Chicago last Spring and one [illegible] only I remember, "Gov Yates the soldiers friend." and I believe you are
such a noble Governor, loyal, so true. When the 36th Ills Inf. left Aurora 3 years in Sept. I bid adieu to two loved brothers. They loved their home, and friends, but their country more. One of them has fallen near the summit of Mission Ridge the fatal ball struck him and in 18 days he gave up his young life to his country
Requiescant in Pace
A few weeks more and if God wills my remaining brother will return honorably discharged and I know that he would be greatly pleased could he see in my Album a Photograph of the Gov of Ills. If you soon send your Photograph with Autograph it will be thankfully rec'd by Yours Respectfully,
Gertrude Reeder
