Gov. Richard Yates

Dear Sir---Will you permit me to inquire if in your judgment the exigences of the times require, that all union men should organize and arm, and be ready to put down insurrections in this state; We have had this matter before our Union League, and we are unanimously determined to be prepared for any emergency that arise, We wish to show every infernal traitor that this Government cannot be broken, Many of us are unfit to go to the front, but we will fight to put down insurrections in our own state if our services are required. We are to have a meeting next Saturday in relation to this matter, and we should be pleased to hear form you before that time.

Yours respectfully

Calvin Copeland
