Lieut Col James E Oakes,

Assistant Provost Marshal Genl. &c

Springfield Ills.

Sir: Capt. George J Johns late of Co B. 63rd Regt Ills. Vols. has resigned his position because of physical disability. He is desirous of procuring commission in the Invalid Corps - I take great pleasure in speaking of him as a thoroughly loyal and competent man. He entered service, having recruited a full company, in February 1862. and his efficiency and good conduct has been reported to me through official & reliable sources. The interest of the service would be advanced by his appointment
