Belleville, Aug 27, 61
Dear Governor,
The bearer is Adolphus Engelman, my brother in law, and by your appointment Lieutenant Col of the "Koerner Regiment". He desires to get passes for the Col. to pass men up to Camp. Perhaps blank passes could be furnished. It will not do to apply for each Company or squad, it takes too long. The Telegraph at this place has been discontinued a few days ago.
Unless we can send troops by squads, we cannot keep them together. The St. Louis recruiting officers swarm through every place, and by dint of many false promises, induce men to go away.
There are 2 Companies now in Camp, and a fraction of one. Two or three more from other counties are already offered. I have no doubt, I will succeed, in spite of all difficulties, and in spite of the fact that nearly an entire battalion had left here just a few days before I got the authority. By kindness to Mr. Engelman You will oblige me much
Yours truly G Koerner
