Hon Richard Yates
Dear Govr.
Permit me to recall to your acquaintance my friend John B. Hawley Esq. whom I had the pleasure of introducing to you at our last State Convention, but whom you may not now recollect, inasmuch as he informs me that he has not since then had the pleasure of meeting you.
I am sure however that he is not unknown to you by reputation, either as one of our most able and successful lawyers, or as one of our most
prominent and popular citizens. His visit to Springfield is one of reconnoissance, and if a favorable opportunity offers, would like a military commission in some one of the regiments now being formed in the State. If any such position is now open for this section of the state, I know of no one more competent therefor than Mr Hawley. Altho' not a military man by education, he has given the sciences much attention, and in my judgement, would fulfil the duties of any position in a regiment, with credit to the State and its service, as well as to himself. Instead of a mere introd-
uction (which i am frequently called upon by my neighbors to present you) I would seek to interest you especially in my friend Hawley - and if you can consistently aid him, I am persuaded you will find it agreeable to do so. Your attentions will not only be well deserved but kindly appreciated, and of yr assistance to him will place me under renewed obligations to you
Very truly
Your friend
