Description
Likeness of Herbert Hoover, the thirty-first President of the United States (1929-1933). At the time of this stereograph's creation, Hoover was a rising star in the Republican party, serving as the head of the U.S. Food Administration during World War I and as U.S. Secretary of Commerce in the twenties. Immediately following the war, Hoover headed the American Relief Administration, which organized massive food shipments to central Europe and Bolshevik Russia. After the Great Crash of 1929, Hoover lost the confidence of the American people, who blamed him for the onset of the Great Depression. He lost his bid for reelection in 1932, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the presidency in a landslide.
