Gov Yates

Springfield Ills

Dear Sir

I wrote you some time since in regard to the acceptance of a Company, a few weeks after, recd a "Telegram" to have the co ready in 10 or 12 days - but I was unable to do it as the men enlisted in other companies and on their way to St Louis & Camp Butler. I do earnestly wish to take a part in this contest, having organized the first "Fremont Club" in the State. I believe this to be the vindication by "force of Arms" of the principles of the party preferring that "Freedom" should be national.

I am able to bear arms - but I believe I could perform the duties of Adjutant, or Assistant or asst Commisary. I am recommended to apply to you or the Adjutant Genl by Capt Geo Barrell who is the [gentlemanly?] agt [GM?] R Rd here - and resident of Springfield. I applied to Col J. White of the Fremont Rifle Reg Chicago Ills. for the position of Adj'nt and gave the names of the best businessmen of this place as references - no reply yet. Yours Respt
