Richard Yates
Dear Sir;
I learn that there is a vacancy in the 45th Regt Ills Volunteers and that the appointment rests with you - as the 45th or Lead Mine Regt was mostly raised here in this & adjoining Counties it would seem only reasonable that when a man of capacity, patriotism and unflinching integrity is pressed for the place (by his friends, for he is far too modest himself to apply) that he should receive the appointment; you will receive a statement of what many of our most prominent & influential citizens think of him - I am well acquainted with Mr Spensely's father as also his son John - whom we desire to see appointed 2d Lieut
You would add much to your own reputation by yielding to the desires of the petitioners in selecting Mr Spensely for the situation here indicated
