Hon R. Yates
Governor of Ill.
Sir. The good work moves forward and I trust Illinois will be all right on Tuesday.
While engaged in the canvass to the very last day, I am concerned for fear I shall be blamed by my Sgt. and Commanders for not securing the number of men for our organization which was expected. In addition to this I have heard nothing from Gen. Howard to whom you proposed to write concerning my delay in Ill. According to agreement at Babcocks in Canton, I had Regimental notices printed signing myself "Lt Col." but my Commission had not come. Rev F M Havermole writes that you had ordered a Com. for him in the 55th. Rev C. Springer was elected last spring to that position, and is expecting it now. The 127th Ill have applied through me to get them a Chaplain, and
I am satisfied that Rev Havermole will suit them well. Both of these men are well calculated for the place and I trust you will be able thus to Commission them.
My Commission was to have been forwarded to my address at Abingdon Knox Co. Ill.
Hoping our nation will be honored with your voice in the Senate of the United States I subscribe myself
Your Most Obt Servant
M. L. Haney.
Chaplain 55th Ill. Vol.
Ps I have written Fuller about Havermole and Springer. If possible render me aid in getting men for the 55th.

While he has been busily engaged in the political canvass he has not been successful in getting many men for his Regt. Wants Govr to assist him in any way possible to fill it up. Recommends Rev Mr F M Havormole as Chapn of his Regt. (55th) and Rev C Springer as chapln of 127th. He wishes Govr to send him his commission as Lt Col.
