Chicago, Ill.,
Nov. 11th 64.
To His Excellency
Richard Yates;
Dear Governor,
I wound up my part of the campaign by voting for Abe Lincoln in the 2nd Ward this city.
I start this evening for Ohio. I shall probably remain there 10 days and go from there with my father to Connecticut and from there to Washington. I shall be in Washington by the 25th and possibly before.
I have a letter to Mr. Lincoln by the chairman of State Central Committee strongly urging, in consideration
of my services &c, that I may be permitted to fight for those principles I have advocated on the stump. I desire a commission - a field office at least - of Colored Troops, I shall receive other letters and am promised the assistance of Mr. Ingersoll & others. I have a request to make of you that you will also give me letters recommending such an appointment to the proper authorities.
I have made 210 speeches within the last 12 months and 98 since the opening of the campaign. I have been employed by the Committees of Rock Island, Henry and Knox Counties - and the returns show a good work.
Any letters that you may see fit to give me to the authorities in Washington with a view to an appointment to command of Colored troops will be very acceptably received. If written before the 17th direct to Ravenna Ohio, if after, to Washington City.
Rejoicing that we can congratulate ourselves upon having completely vanquished the enemies of the government I subscribe myself
Your obedt. Servt.
