Sir:

I have the honor to request a Furlough, (or rather request you to order my Commanding Officer to make out one) for (60) Sixty days, to go to my Home in Tazewell County Illinois, my reason for applying to you is this. when it became necessary that I should go Home I applied (through my Capt.) to Lt Col. R.G. Laughlin Comd'g Regt. who said he would willingly approve a Furlough for me, but that it could do no good as he had approved and forwarded a number all of which have been returned from District Hd. Qrs. not approved; seeing that I could not get a Furlough through the usual Channel, I was induced to apply to you knowing the interest you have always manifested in, and the kindly feeling you have for the Soldier, I do so with every assureance that my request will be granted. My reasons for desiring a Furlough are as follows. I left my business in a very unsettled state when I left Home in Aug. 1862, that it has become almost absolutely necessary that I should be at Home a short time, at least in order to settle my business and see to my Family which consists of. Wife and two Children (had three Children when I left Home) I have never had a Furlough. Trusting that you will in your clemency grant my request and order the same. I subscribe myself very Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant.
