Head Quarters, 3'd Division,
4th A.C. Army of the Cumberland
Pulaski, Tenn, Nov 20th, 1864
To His Excellency, Richard Yates,
Governor of Illinois.
Sir:
Col P. Sidney Post, 59th Illinois veteran volunteers, has participated actively, usefully, and most credibility in many of the most important and brilliant operations of our armies in the West. Commencing with the Virginia campaigns of 1861 Col Post's career to the present time has been one of constant activity. He has commanded a brigade in Genl Davis' Division of the 20th army corps with the approval and confidence of his superiors in rank.
On this reorganization of the Army of the Cumberland in the autumn of 1863 Col Post's regiment was assigned to the 1st division of this corps; but during the Atlanta campaign I applied, on account of his peculiar fitness for command, to have his regiment assigned to my Division, which being done, I assigned Col Post to
the command of a brigade. His soldierly and most officer-like conduct during this remainder of the campaign, (as indeed had his good conduct in the previous parts of the campaign,) secured my warmest approval. His conduct in all our operations since the termination of the Atlanta campaign has been equally praise-worthy. At the close of the Atlanta campaign I forwarded a special recommendation recommending Col Post for promotion to the grade of Brigadier General of Volunteers. This recommendation was cordially approved by Major Genl Stanley, commanding the 4th Corps, by Major Genl Thomas, commanding the Army and Department of the Cumberland, and by Major Genl Sherman, commanding the Grand Military Division of the Mississippi.
I know that Col Post has the active confidence of his superiors in rank, and that they (???sbly) desire his promotion. Whatever your Excellency can do to secure this result will be an effort worthily made.
I have the honor to be your
Excellency's most obedient servant,
Th: J. Woods,
