Chicago. Nov. 25. 1864.
Dear Sir:
My son Frank Drummond was a non-commissioned officer in Co. D. 134 Regt. of Ills. Vol. recently discharged from the service. He is very anxious to reenter the Service and though his mother and myself do not particularity desire it, State we have acquiesced in his strong wishes on the subject. Col. Erskine of the 13th Ills. Cavalry Commanding, now stationed at Pine Bluff Arkansas has written to Frank saying that he has recommended him to Adjt. Genl Fuller for the appointment of Regimental Quarter Master. I believe [both?] Col. Eastman and Mr. Jones were kind enough to mention the matter to you during your recent visit to Chicago. I am not familiar with the regulations, & do not
know whether the Col of the Regiment appoints the Quarter Master from some officer of the Regt or whether he is commissioned as such directly by you, but I understand that he must bear the commission of First Lieutenant and that appointment is asked for him. If Col. Erskine's letter to Genl Fuller is at Springfd, that will explain the matter, though of course you comprehend it fully.
Mr. Jones informs me he has written to you since you left & Col. Eastman also writes the enclosed & says he has written a private note in addition. Col. Eastman suggested that I should write to you on the subject & therefore I have taken the liberty of writing this Note.
If you should be kind enough to give my son the appointment I believe he will prove to be intelligent, honest, active
and industrious.
My son can, if necessary,0 obtain recommendations from his former commanding officers, but I presume you will deem the statements of Col. Eastman & Mr. Jones sufficient.
I have the honor to be Governor, your obdt servt
Thomas Drummond
To the Hon. Richard Yates
Gov. of Illinois.
