[illegible] 39 Ills Vol Near Richmond VA Dec 4 1864
To His Excellency Richard Yates Gov of Ills
Dear Governor
I have just returned to my Regiment although as yet unable for full duty - I find the Regiment in good condition and good spirits, but much reduced by battle. Before leaving Chicago I made arrangements with our Excellent Artist Selden J Woodman to paint for the Regiment a full length portrait of your Excellency with the C Yates Phalan, in the back ground. The portrait when finished to be placed in the Governors Gallery at Springfield.
Will you be so kind as to do the Regiment and myself the favor by reporting in person or by letter to Woodman at Chicago. He has promised to execute the job at your earliest convenience, and we would be glad to have it finished before your present term as Governor of our State expires - if possible.
The Artist will be found at Room 22 - 85 Washington St Chicago.
I have the honor Governor To be Yours Most Respectfully T.O. Osborn Col. 39th Ills Mob Inf
