Gov State of Ills

My Dear Sir

I have recd your letter earnestly recommending Col Snyder to me for a clerkship in the Executive Depart - I know he is an Excellent young man. I know he has a good wife and my own wife insists upon it that Johny Snyder is all and more than you claim for him. I am not aware how many may be allowed me there I presume not more than I shall require. I have requested Col Loomis to remain in some place with me of that kind I have also mentioned the same to a gentleman here. Governor Hoffman asks me to retain Hershback. I hope to be able in a week or two to come down and spend a day or two with you and will then see what the chances will be for Col Snyder. I am very buisy reading State matters and some time next week hope to be able to get to work on the inevitable Inaugural. I believe I had rather fight a battle than write one. I have just read the Presidents message. It is remarkable for nothing. is what will be called a good message. It is a plain fair statement of National affairs. makes a very good point on the "insurgent leader" -. What do you think of it,

Yours truly
