Washington, Decr 8th 1864
Dear Govr.
Some time ago, you promised, in case a vacancy occurred during your incumbency, that you would appoint me Trustee of the Illinois Central Rail Road Company. Such vacancy has not yet occurred: but I have learnt, that my friend, John Moore, will resign, at once, if the appointment can be conferred on me. If you will do me this favor, however, I will feel under infinite obligation to you, and endeavor, at any, and at all times, to reciprocate, to the utmost extent of my ability. If you will confer on me this appointment, please telegraph me, at my expense, and I will at once telegraph Mr Moore, of your kindness, or, if you will notify him, that you will appoint me, on his resignation, I know he will at once resign. Please do this favor for me Gov as it cannot affect any other arrangement: Moore not being willing to resign, unless I get the appointment. Please advise me of your decision.
Sincerely your friend,
John Wilson
