Springfield. Illinois.
December 22. 1864.
To the President
of the United States.
I have the honor respectfully to recommend Isaac L. Morrison Esq. of Jacksonville, Illinois, for the office of Dist. Attorney of the United States for the Southern District of Ill, should there be a vacancy in said office.
I have been personally acquainted with Mr Morrison for many years. He has been a firm, consistent and able supporter and friend of the present Administration, from the first. He is for crushing the Rebellion by the military power, & restoring the Union, at any cost & at all hazards.
He has risen by patient, assiduous,
and honest toil and study, to a deservedly distinguished professional position. I know that he is regarded by the best members of the Bar in this region of the State, as a sound and able lawyer. He is proverbially industrious & attentive to business.
I believe his moral character to be without stain or reproach - and I know that he is universally esteemed by his friends and neighbors as a pure, upright, & honorable man.
He is remarkably affable and obliging, yet always dignified and courteous in manner & leaning.
Believing that these qualities, which none who know him will refuse to concede, render him eminently fitted to be the legal representa
tive of the U. States in this Dist, I earnestly hope that, in case a change is made, he may be appointed to the position.
Very Respectfully,
Your obt. servt.
Newton Bateman.
