Gov Yates
Dear Sir
I could not come to see you this afternoon.
A week today I recd. a letter from Mr. Grimshaw for you, which he requested me to deliver in person, but circumstances, have prevented. I now send it. Mr. Grimshaw cannot accept the place you offer him, which he repeats in a letter I received this morning. He is now in Pike. My brother who passed through here on thursday thought he might yet accept, but he probably ought not to do so. The regiment as constituted is one of the best in the field – and I wish they could have a military man to command them. I now
suggest that you appoint Hon William Kellogg - who is a resident of that district ,and who is understood to desire a regiment. There are some other reasons which might be assigned why it would be proper to appoint him.
I herewith send you another letter in their connection.
Yours truly
O.M. Hatch
P.S. I beg leave to remind you that you have a Secretary of State who is willing and ready to assist you at any time.
O.M.H.
Hatch recommends William Kellogg for Colonel.
