December 28th, 1867 Respected Sir, it is a ganst my feligns to rite these few lines to you but my [illegible] compels me to trouble you i hope and trust to gody you will try and relive me in my situasion for i have no friends near me to help mee my poor son William H. Higgs has died at nashville last March the 21st. he was in the 115 Reg. Illinois Vol. Since then i have appealed for his Bounty and ask that thay sent mee word that thay would send it as soon as posable i can a sur you My dear Friend i have not One stick of wood to warm my poor children nor a morsel of bread i have a affected in my sight and inable to work at present i am in great distress at this present time i Shall Be truly thankful for the Smallest [illegible] you can send mee i Will be quit Willing to return it as soon as thay send My poor Son Bounty and Back pay i hope With the Blessign of God i May hear from you Soon i remain your Humble Servant.
