Head Quarters. 2d Brig. 3d Cav. Div.
Near Savannah. Ga. Dec 30th 1864
Hon. Richard Yates
Springfield. Ills.
In the official report of Brig Genl Kilpatrick of the late campaign from Atlanta to Savannah, the following paragraph occurs:
"Before closing my remarks I "desire to make favorable mention "of my Brigade Commanders, Col's "Murray and Atkins - both have"at all times faithfully and ably "performed the responsible duties "that have devolved upon them-always "on duty, attending to orders, energetic, "skillful and brave _ both are educated " gentlemen and accomplished Cavalry "soldiers. Both merit promotion."
Coming as it does from
Genl. Kilpatrick, without the least possible solicitation on my part, I am proud of it; and write it to you, believing from the warm interest in me you have heretofore evinced, you will be glad to know it. I do not expect it will procure me a "illegible" but I can afford to wait; While such an acknowledgment from my General of (illegible) greatly compensates for the persecution I have heretofore been compelled to labor under.
As I note you from Marietta I believe myself indebted to you for my present favorable Surroundings, and trusting that my conduct as a soldier will still meet your approval
Your Most Respy
Smith W. Atkins
