Hon Rich. Yates
Gove of State Ill
Springfield
Dear Sir
Your kind note of
the 27 just is received, and I would gladly
come to Springfield if it was in my power
to do so, if I could be of the slightest as
sistance to you, but my permit expires
on the first Janry, and I must report at Cairo
at that time. If it is possible for me to get
away from there after a day or two and
run up to Springfield I will do so;
for I trust that I need not assure you
that you have no friend who is more
desirous than myself that you should be our
next Senator, not from personal mo
tives, but because it is justly yours, by -
merit, Patriotism, Talents, & worth, and
my firm convictions are, that these will
triumphantly carry you through, and
cover with shame and ignominy the false men
and [illegible] friends who have so shame
fully been [illegible] false, I see the Tribune is
now silent. This to my mind points to
your unproved [choices?]. Is it possible
that Senator Eastman can be so
[illegible] to every [sense?] of right, and claim
of gratitude as to support an other. If so
he forfeits all claims to respect and honor
able treatment from Gentlemen. If you
truly believe that I can be of any benefit to
you write or Telegraph to me at Cairo
Ill. and I will try and [illegible] things so
that I can get away for a few days.
Wishing you many Happy
New Years and Succefs
I am your True & Sincere friend
and Obt Servt
