His Excellency
R. Yates
My dear Sir
I hasten to tender you my congratulations as Senator elect of Illinois. Sickness in my family alone prevented me from being present but I never had a doubt of your Election -- Any other result would be disgraced the State and especially so if Washbourne had succeeded. -- Calligan says "tell the Governor I feel All the while like taking my hat off & Thinking, bully for you!" - Your friends are jubilant but a few professed friends who have been really your enemies and endeavored in every way to secure your defeat
begin to hang their heads in shame! God save us from such friends as these. ---
But enough! It is a glorious victory -- and we have nothing to do but to rejoice that the voice of the people as expressed at the last election has been obeyed by their representatives -- The position is yours by pre eminent merit. --
With Best regards to Mrs Y -- believe me as always
Your sincere friend
