Dear Sir
I have just returned from a Conference Meeting of a few of our friends and find that our folks are enthusiastic in preparing to receive you
After we left you yesterday, met Bateman and incidentally learned from him, that he was as much interested in the appointment of our mutual friend [M.?] as we were, and that he had done something to aid him. I told him that we had just seen you, and had secured your co-operation unless Mr C. should apply, which would make it more difficult to determine. My object in writing this is to tell you, what will doubtless be very gratifying to you, that Mr C. does not want it but, does want another place, and M Bateman authorizes met say that Mr C. will aid our friend M., with pleasure If it were not that you have been so much occupied as well as somewhat nearly harassed with your own matters, it would be strange how you could have forgotten N. but under the circumstances your forgetfulness is not remarkable but the first name on Mr C.s paper is your own
over
I feel very much gratified that the matter now stands as it does, and am also pleased to have it in such a condition as not to place you in an embarassing position by your being compelled to choose between two persons
It is also pleasant to succeed when we undertake to do something for our friends.
Trusting that you will be in good time and that we shall have a pleasant time when you come home
I am Yours Truly
