Hennepin Jan'y 9 1865
Hon. Richard Yates.
Excuse a brief Congratulatory note from your old friend. You are elected to the U. S. Senate as I thought you would be, and on that result I give you my (drawing of a hand). It was due you and I rejoice that you have got it --
Now if consistent with your views and feelings I want you to help me a little. Jas. M. Allen at present. Provost Martial of this District. has by his arbitrary and tyranical conduct. rendered himself very unpopular and ought to be removed. I know of but one man in this Co. who supports him, and that is Andrew Wardlaw our county enrolling officer. I don't ask much for myself, yet would like not to be entirely forgotten. but I can name a mutual friend who would fill the bill
It is Jas. A. Henderson of Toulon Stark County. He knows nothing of this move by me & might not approve of it -- Please let me hear from you
Yours Truly
