Alton, Sept. 4, 1861
Gov. Yates,
Dear Sir:
I hereby most cheerfully recommend Cpt. Jno. E. Coppinger of this city as being worthy an appointment of Captain: he can and will do good service. He can go to Missouri, but we desire him to have a commission here.
Mr. Coppinger is capable and can no doubt organize a good Company here, and it is a matter I feel much interest in seeing accomplished. Will you do us the favor, if consistant with your judgment for the public good, to grant the request. Mr. C is an Irishman and there are many of his fellow=countrymen here who are eager to enlist under him.
He thinks of enterring Hon P. B. Fouke's, or some other Regiment, if favored with a Commission
Yours Truly, H. G. McPike
This appointment will harmonize a Democratic element here which it is very desireable to accomplish If it meets your favor, we desire his Commission sent to him at Alton immediately
Recommendation
Capt Coppinger
