My nephew Robert S. Cavender Esq. desires the appointment of Major in the Regiment now raising for guard duty in this city. He has the ability to make himself a good officer, & to fill the post, with credit to himself, & to the satisfaction of the military authorities of the Government. He is brother of Col. John S. Cavender of St. Louis, who is among the very best Volunteer Officers, in the country. & has done gallant service in aiding to crush Reblion, & punish traitors. If you can consistently with your views of duty, confer the appointment of Major upon my namesake & nephew, you will lay me under Special Obligations-
